Sports Perfect Paragraph

Submitted by michaelkim on Sun, 03/18/2018 - 20:00

Many people who involved themselves with physical activities often live longer than those that do not. The fact is, playing sports is good for our physical health. Not only is it good for our health, it is good for our body as it will benefits our cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness. It is scientifically proven that playing sports can increase our life expectancy and better our bone health which is critical for our life expectancy. I grew up playing sports and my mom always said that playing too much sports was bad for me. I would always be sore because I would either play too much sports or be at the gym for too long. I would play basketball everyday for about 3 hours at least in high school and I almost forgot how being sore felt because my body got so used to it. Playing sports is one of the best ways for weight maintanence as well. But due to the dangers of playing some sports, I wanted to play something that didn't put me in a great risk but also was physical and competitive to play. I chose to play basketball tennis and track in high school and I still play them in college as I enjoy playing. I don't regret picking up basketball as my main sport and I will continue to play.

R and K selection

Submitted by malberigi on Tue, 03/13/2018 - 10:31

R-selected species are those that place an emphasis on a high growth rate, and, typically exploit less-crowded ecological niches.  They produce many offspring, each of which has a relatively low probability of surviving to adulthood.  In unstable or unpredictable environments, R-selection predominates as the ability to reproduce quickly is crucial.  Among the traits that are thought to characterize R-selection are small body size, early maturity onset, short generation time, and the ability to disperse offspring widely.  R-selected species produce thousands of offspring but provide little to no parental care after birth.  By contrast, K-selected species display traits associated with living at densities close to carrying capacity.  Typically they are strong competitors in crowded niches that invest more heavily in fewer offspring, each of which has a relatively high probability of surviving to adulthood.  Populations of K-selected organisms are very constant in number and close to the maximum that the environment can bear, unlike r-selected populations, where population size changes more rapidly.  Traits that are thought to be characteristic of K-selection include large body size, long life expectancy, and the production of fewer offspring, which often require extensive parental care until they mature.

Zika Virus PP

Submitted by benjaminburk on Sun, 03/11/2018 - 23:52

This article discussed the effect of the Asian Zika virus on the infected individuals, specifically the negative effects it induces in the blood of pregnant women. Monocytes are a specific type of white blood cells found in blood. They are considered immunomodulators, which simply means that they play an essential role in the immune defense system. These monocytes, specifically the CD14+ Monocytes seem to be the top target of African- or Asian- lineage Zika viruses. The accessibility of the targeted monocytes becomes heightened in the blood of infected and pregnant individuals, leaving them more susceptible to the virus and its effects. Most specifically Asian-lineage Zika resulted in an immunosuppression of monocytes and a shutdown of the interferon signaling pathway. Both of these effects can lead to serious birth complications due to the resulting expression of host genes that are normally left unexpressed. The article illustrated the similar and different effects of the different lineages of the Zika virus, specifically in the pregnant population.

Beginning of Time Perfect Paragraph

Submitted by crmckenzie on Sun, 03/11/2018 - 20:31

Yesterday I read an article titled "Science news: Physicists to probe BEYOND the beginning of time, before CREATION itself" from Express, an online journal from the UK. It discusses that until now, scientists understood the beginning of our universe  as a singularity, or a moment beyond what humans and physics could describe. However, modern physicists claim that this is no longer the case. Several state that Einstein's General Relativity "predicts its own downfall due to singularities".  Modern physicists believe complicated math and the quantum world can discover the secrets behind phenomena such as black holes and even the creation of the universe. Some of these newly developed formulas are shown in the article. String theory had previously been used to study the absence of singularities, however it had its fallbacks. Essentially, this article claims that singularity does not exist, and that becuase of this black holes and cosmology can be studied for their truths.

Crohn's disease - PP

Submitted by sworkman on Fri, 03/09/2018 - 14:13

People with Crohn’s disease have trouble absorbing nutrients because the inflammation of the intestine makes it difficult for the organ to digest and absorb the nutrients from food. The patients low levels of sodium and potassium due to the lack of absorption could be what is causing her diminished sense of touch. Your nerves need a certain amount of potassium to control their function along with muscle function. Potassium and sodium help your nerves send electrical signals, via the sodium potassium pump, that are necessary for nervous system function. The patient's abnormal amounts of the two is causing irregular nerve function that is affecting her sense of touch and causing numbness.

Week 7, Perfect Paragraph

In response to this week's assignment, I took an introductory to statistics course during the Spring of 2015. It was set-up as a team-based learning class therefore towards the end of the semester my team had to complete a large research writing project. This project encompassed all of the concepts we learned throughout the semester. Other than that, basic statistical concepts that I do remember learning were mean, median and mode. I also learned a lot of survey-taking approaches and then how to incorporate the survey raw data into some type of graph. I remember learning about possible graphical skews and biases that might not be noticed at first glance. It was a great learning experience overall, considering how bad I was at AP Statistics in high school. This type of knowledge became very useful in my science classes.

Zika

Submitted by lgiron on Fri, 03/09/2018 - 12:18

The Zika virus has had its uprising the past year. This virus spreading through mosquito bites, sexual intercourse, blood transfusion, and most importantly from a pregnant woman to her fetus. Last year, the Zika virus was struck fear into soon-to-be parents. This virus affected those who were pregnant, however the main problems arose with the babies that the mothers gave birth to. The newborns would have major birth defects including partially collapsed skull, damage to eye, limited joint movement, brain damage and most importantly, decrease in brain size. However, researches have further developed a study in which this virus can actually be used to suppress or even treat deadly brain cancers.

In a study, scientists infected human and mice cells with the Zika virus. In both cells, the virus killed stem cells as thought, however the ones that were killed were ones that would go on to become an aggressive type of brain tumor, the highlight was that it left the healthy cells unharmed. The virus did not infect normal brain tissue, with this, they conducted more research, infecting mice with cancer and observing. Half of the mice infected with cancer were treated with the virus and the other left untreated. The mice who were treated with the virus had tumors that either shrank or grew at a slower rate, therefore living longer, half of them living over six weeks, compared to those untreated who died within two weeks. Further development of this research could bring viable and effective treatment plans to those who are infected with certain brain cancers, however more research is needed to find the effects of this potential treatment option to confirm if it is a reliable treatment option.

What I learned in statistics activity

Submitted by mkomtangi on Fri, 03/09/2018 - 11:47

Last spring semester I took ResEcon 212, which was a statistics class based on social sciences. The class was a team-based learning format and involved a huge project that would analyze the statistical data of a real-life problem, my group chose to measure the food wages within fast food employers and the amount of money spent. Throughout the course I learned about z-tables, mean, median, mode, correlational graphs, and how to use Microsoft excel to input statistical data.

Lungs

Submitted by nchenda on Fri, 03/09/2018 - 10:28

The human body has two lungs located in their chest. The right lung is bigger than the left lung. The right lung has three lobes while the left lung has two lobes. The lobes of the right lung are the upper, middle, and lower. The lobes of the left lung are upper and lower. Each lobe of the lung has segments. The upper lobe of the right lung has segments called the apical, anterior, and posterior. The middle lobe of the right lung has segments called medial and lateral. The lower lobe of the right lung has segments called superior, anterior, posterior, medial, and lateral. The upper lobe of the left lung has segments called anterior and apicoposterior. The lower lobe of the left lung has segments called superior, anterior, posterior, medial, and lateral.

is the US ready for a single-payer health care system - intro

Submitted by drosen on Fri, 03/09/2018 - 10:17

Throughout the course of the United State’s history the foundation of human rights has continually shifted and expanded. At first, the focus was on human rights for those of certain races or gender and over time the focus of these progressive movements has shifted to more specific issues, such as health care. The concepts of affordable universal health care as a human right as well as a single-payer healthcare system have risen in popularity amidst the rises expenses and conversely deteriorating levels of care. Currently 55% of the american public support a single payer system. (Norman). In its present state, health care in the United States is covered by both public insurance programs, such as Medicare or Medicaid, as well as private insurance companies that are typically granted through one’s employer or directly purchased. (Rice). Following the mounting pressure from the american public as well as several democratic government employees, the affordable care act (ACA) was passed in 2014 which attempted to decrease the amount of uninsured or underinsured citizens. This was the United State’s first step towards a system that began to resemble a single-payer system or national health insurance system where a centralized government system provides universal healthcare that is then performed by private practices. (Dorning). Galae’s article describes the current socio-economic implications of this change, particularly in regards to a single-payer system. Galea provides an assessment of the political landscape by identifying the opposing parties and their concerns before countering these claims using the concept of a single-payer system and the nations that have already implemented this system.
