Ecology Assignment 5 Week 6 Draft 6

Submitted by jngomez on Thu, 03/01/2018 - 13:31

I don’t think the regional species richness on the mainland will affect how many species are predicted to be found on an island based on the equilibrium theory of island biogeography.  It is known to be that geographic areas have a vast influence on species diversity on global and regional spatial scales. The equilibrium theory of island biogeography indicates that there is a relationship between species and area. In islands and mainland areas, species richness is theorized to be regulated by rates of immigration and extinction. In mainland’s, immigration rates are greater because barrier to dispersal are lower. Since mainland is known to have high immigration rates and low extinction rates it leads to a lower rate of increase in species richness with increasing area.

Week 6 Draft 5 Methods Part of Intro

In Spring 2018, as part of the Writing in Biology course at the University for Massachusetts, Amherst a methods project was carried out. The methods section in a piece of scientific writing is an important aspect of an experiment because it illustrates to other prospering scientists what they need to follow in order to obtain the same results. For this project I choose Euphorbia pulcherrima euphorbiaceae, which is a plant found in Mexico and Guatemala.

In any kind of experiment carried out an important aspect is the methods section. This impact whether your results are valid and can be carried out by other colleagues. For this experiment two photos of the plant species, Euphorbia pulcherrima euphorbiaceae were obtained. This plant is situated in one of the multiple Morrill Greenhouses in the University of Massachusetts, Amherst campus. A multi-panel figure was created to illustrate the plant species.  One of the photos taken was a close-up of the species while the other was a photograph of the plant species as a whole. A world map with the countries Mexico and Guatemala colored in was included as well. This depicted where the plant was indigenous to. Methods produced at the end exemplified how the multi-panel figure was composed and how the photos were obtained. It was then shared with another individual and at the end both resulting multi-panels were compared. Differences were seen in the resolutions of each photo and as well as scaling. The differences were evident and explained.

Week 6 Draft 4 Abstract Methods

In any kind of experiment carried out an important aspect is the methods section. This impacts whether your results are valid and can be carried out by other colleagues. In this assignment, skills were obtained after learning that in order to have others follow your methods and create an identical result, a key thing is being specific. There are factors that compose a scientific literature and through this project we saw the components of being innovative and using correct word choice.

Week 6 Draft 3

After analyzing the replicated multi-panel figure obtained, it clearly exhibits some distinct differences and similarities. Shown below is the replicated multi-panel figure labeled as figure two. In the replicated figure constructed and the original, the same plant species was photographed which means the individual was able to find the Euphorbia pulcherrima euphorbiaceae located in Morrill Greenhouse. In addition, the orientation of images obtained, and lettering is identical. However, there are also some distinct features between the two. It is evident that the individual did not use a similar font, font size, or software to create the figure. In figure 2, there are periods after each lettering and the map is colored in red versus purple. Although the software to generate a world-map was similar the style to display was dissimilar.

They are seasonal bloomers and can grow to a height of 3-10 feet and spread about 3-7 feet. This plant species contains bracts which can vary in color from red, orange, pale green, cream, pink, white, to marbled. However, those bracts are sometimes highly mistaken for flower petals when in actuality they are leaves. It is easy to mistake them because of the grouping of this bracts and the vibrant colors they display. During the day they require a lot of light for the brightest color. Some primary regions of Mexico in which it is native to is in the wild in the deciduous tropical forests. This type of plant is also mostly seen during the festivities time of winter. They have long been seen as a decoration during Christmas time. This is one of the reason I choose this to be my plant species since it’s a plant I have also seen during festivities and it reminds me of home.

Overall, this project was helpful in learning to be descriptive and wording of certain sentences can impact the results you want. Informing of others about the procedure you took to create a figure or study is a key thing when it comes to crafting any kind of piece of scientific literature. From lab notebooks to published articles. There are a variety of factors that resulted in the distinctions between the resulting figures. Specificity should have also been indicated in the angle each image should have been capture. In addition, to how much attention should be drawn to the plant. I should have also specific that the coloring of the countries Euphorbia pulcherrima euphorbiaceae is indigenous to should be purple. Identity of the website and software used to create the map should have been indicated and stated.

Week 5 Intro to Methods Project PP

The primary objective in this assignment is to obtain a diverse set of skills when composing a scientific literature piece. To learn about the aspects in writing and composing scientific writing entries. In particular, we focused on the methods section part of the composure. The methods section in a piece of scientific writing is an important aspect of an experiment because it illustrates to other prospering scientist what they carried out to obtain the results they desired. Every experimental procedure has an idea and hypothesis. Their method of proof could either fail or succeed. However, the primary objective is to be as detailed as possible so that others could replicate it and obtain similar results. A multi-panel figure was created to illustrate the plant species of our choice and it includes a detailed picture of the plant, the plant species as a whole, and a high-quality map depicting the origin of the species. For this project I choose Euphorbia pulcherrima euphorbiaceae, which is a plant found in Mexico and Guatemala.

For this assignment the primary objective was to learn about the aspects in writing and composing scientific writing entries. The methods section is an important aspect of an experiment because it illustrates to other prospering scientist what they carried out to obtain the results they desired. Every experimental procedure has an idea and hypothesis. With this hypothesis in mind there are a variety of components that go into supporting it. Their method of proof could either fail or succeed. However, the primary objective is to be as detailed as possible so that others could replicate and obtain identical results. Throughout this project we will learn of a variety of ways to gain skills in being descriptive, experimental, and innovative. A multi-panel figure was created to illustrate the plant species of our choice and it includes a detailed picture of the plant, the plant species as a whole, and a high-quality map depicting the origin of the species.

In order to achieve an ideal picture, one must take a picture when the light is shining on the plant to portray its pigmented red color. A full picture of the species will illustrate a variety of the species. To accomplish this a few feet should be taken back from the plant to capture other species in the frame. Should be standing at an angle.  In achieving a close-up photograph of the plant, an individual must get close to the species which is about six and a half inches away. This is to capture an ideal picture and draw attention to the details that this particular species contains. In the close up and full plant photographs it will contain the surrounding green color leaves that embody it. In each photo light should reflect on the plant to complete the image.
