The photograph of the close-up spider webs placed in Panel A in the figures are not identical. In figure 1 a gift card was used for scale, but in Figure 2 a Ucard was used. In Figure 2 the Ucard was placed on the left side of the web, instead of near the bottom of the web like it was Figure 1. In addition, the spider web in Figure 2 was more zoomed out. In Figure 1 the bush appears darker than it does in Figure 1. Another observed difference in this panel is the web. In Figure 2 the web is more visible than it is in Figure 1.

In the formatting of Figure 1 and Figure 2 there were differences. One of the most prominent differences is in the sizing of the figure. Figure 1 is larger than Figure 2. The second Figure also featured a border around the Figure, while Figure 1 does not. The circular labels in the top left hand corners of each panel are different sizes between the figures. Within the circle labels, the text was also made to be a different size and font. In addition, to the overall formatting and creation of the figures there are also differences within the photographs and map.

The Figure is made up of 3 panels which were put together with Inkspace. These panels allow the viewer to not only see the web, but also the surrounding area, and a map that shows where the web can be found. The first of the 3 panels is the web, as that was the main subject of the figure. Due to both the web picture and the environment picture being taken as vertical pictures, they were placed side by side while the map which was in the horizontal position was placed underneath. All of the panels were lined up at the corners to create a seamless presentation. In order to make which panel is which obvious to the viewer labels were placed. These labels were made in Inkspace. The different photographs included corners of different colors, so it was important to include a background to the letter labels. The background color that was chosen was white, so the black, uppercase, Arial font letter could stand out very well. For strictly aesthetic purposes the surrounding background that was chosen was circular and the opacity was put to 178 to allow some of the background of the photograph to show through. We read left to right so it was decided to put the labels in the top left hand corner of each panel. The map was the largest of the 3 panels, and takes up more of the figure than the top two panels combined. Once all of the panels were put together the largest side of the figure- which runs vertical was put to 1200 pixels.

A map was included in the figure to show where the web was located.  To avoid copyright issues, the map was taken as a screenshot from OpenStreetMap.org. To find the location, I typed in the closest permanent fixture near the bush which was Franklin Dining Hall. OpenStreetMap.org is not too detailed so I screenshotted a larger area to show more buildings, and the whole Permaculture Garden. This screenshot was wider than it was tall. The screenshot showed from the Shade Tree Lab past Clark Hall and the grass area past Franklin. Due to the large area covered in the map, I included a red circle which showed the exact location of the web on the bush. In order to not confuse the viewer, I also constructed a key in the bottom right-hand corner that showed the same circle and wrote location of web next to it. The key was placed onto a white background that was outlined in black to make it easily seen.

The figures that were created have similarities, but there are also many differences. Between figure 1 and figure 2 a common difference is with the labels. In the second figure the font is larger, darker, and a different type of font. When looking at the individual panels between the figures differences also arise. For example, in panel A the picture is taken at a different angle. Due to the different angle of the photograph figure 1’s includes a lot more of the plant’s pot. In panel B there are differences in the lighting. The difference causes a shadow over the plant.

The figures that were created have differences in the overall format of the pictures. The first figure is smaller than the second figure. In addition, the first picture has absolutely no white space between the panels, while the second figure does. When the second figure was formatted the corners of panel A were not lined up perfectly so the edges of the figure look messier.

When the figures were created there were differences made in the labels. In Figure 1 the color of the letters is a royal blue. The second figure’s labels are more of a navy blue. In addition, the second figure’s labels are larger. Between the two figures the font that was chosen for the letter labels are different.

Panel A in figure 1 and Panel A in figure two are not perfectly the same. One of the main differences is the composition of the picture. Figure 1 includes a lot more of the flower pot than figure 2.

The factor that lead to the differences in panel A is the angle and position that the photographs were taken. In Figure 1 the photo was taken from a lower height, while the second figure’s photo was taken from higher up.

Panel B in both figures contain the same type of plant, but the figures still vary. The first figure’s panel B is a lot brighter than the second figures. The brightness of the photograph makes it easier to see the plant.

For easy replicability, it was important that the camera position was something that anyone could achieve. The web picture was taken from between the break in the bushes. This area was used because it was the closest you could get to the web without disturbing it. To include the whole web and the gift card that was used for scale, the phone was held about 1.5 feet above the web. At 1.5 feet above, the gift card that was placed on the bottom right side of the photograph was easily seen. The phone was placed completely horizontal as the web was also flat against the bush. The photograph includes the whole web, but there is also a little bit of space around the edges where there is no web and only needles from the bushes. When it came to taking the picture of the environment, the camera position was at a 90-degree angle. The position it was taken from was about 4 feet right, and 3 feet backward from the web. From this position, the image was able to include the web, all the corner bushes, some of French Hall, a wooden structure that held saplings, and the Permaculture Garden shed in the background. This angle was chosen because it allowed for a lot of nature in the picture, and not only man-made structures such as buildings.

The picture of the spider web was taken on an overcast day. The time of day was 11:55am so the sun was overhead, but not shining bright due to clouds. Although clouds filled the sky, no precipitation had fallen. The air was still as there was no wind. It was chosen to take the picture during this weather because in the fall this weather is present a lot during the Fall.

The setting of the spider web was on a bush by Franklin Dining Hall. The precise location was latitude 42°23’21.40” N and the longitude was 72°31’22.35” W. The bush was on the perimeter of the Permaculture Garden closest to the dining hall. The corner it was closest to was closest to French Hall. The exact bush was the first bush after the break in bushes after the corner bush. This web was chosen because it seemed to be the thickest, which would be best for photographing it.

A map was also included in the figure to show a glimpse of where the web was located.  To avoid copyright issues, the map was taken as a screenshot from OpenStreetMap.org.
