Analysis of an Iron Coordination Complex

The objective of this experiment is to determine whether the complex that was created in Experiment 1 was actually K3[Fe(C2O4)3]·3H2O. More specifically, to determine the molar ratio of C2O42-/Fe3+ that then can be used to find the number of moles of K+. The analysis that was performed is mostly consistent with the complex K3[Fe(C2O4)3]·3H2O. The average mole ratio of C2O42- : Fe3+ that was created was 2.82 moles where the ideal mole ratio was 3 moles. When comparing the actual to theoretical yield, the percent yield is 94% which shows that the analysis was executed quite well with little error. One source of error could have been inaccurate readings of measurements during titrations resulting in rounding errors and throwing off calculations.

Refraction and Reflection

The slope is 1.01 and the intercept is approximately 0 (-6.03E-3). The relationship between the angles should be that they are either equal or very close in value. According to Snell’s law the sines of the angles should only differ by the two different indices of refraction. One index being air (1) and the other index should be very close to 1 as the difference between the values of sin incident and refraction should be the other index of reflection.

Autism and Gut Microbiome

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there has been a significant increase in the diagnoses of autism. In 2000, one in every 150 children were diagnosed with Autism in the US. More recently, the numbers have increased drastically where one in every 59 children are diagnosed. The search for medical treatments has been ongoing. One promising avenue includes analysis of the gut microbiome. Recent research suggests that changes in normal gut microbiota may be responsible for a large range of diseases. This is specifically of interest for autism research because roughly 30-50% of people with autism have chronic gastrointestinal (GI) problems.

Citric Acid

Overall, the concentration of citric acid was slightly higher than the concentration of phosphoric acid. This makes sense because citric acid is the only thing used to obtain the tart flavor for clear soda whereas phosphoric acid is used as a compliment with caramel to obtain the flavor for dark soda. The Ka’s found during this lab appear to be slightly larger for both citric acid and phosphoric acid when compared to the Ka’s found in our previous lab.

Depression Symptoms

If I had a friend that seems to have depression symptoms I could recommend trying behavior therapy. Behavior therapy works to increase the number of positive reinforcers in a person's life. This therapy often goes in hand with the behavior theory which is the idea that life stressors decrease positive reinforcers in someone's life. For example, I could suggest that my friend gets out of the house and hangs out with her friends. This may be a positive reinforcement and may help her "get out of bed in the morning." Although, in the grand scheme of things this may not seem like a permanent or extremely helpful solution, as a friend it is something that I would feel comfortable suggesting.

Panic Disorder

A cognitive distortion that a person who has panic disorder may experience falls under the idea of "all-or-nothing thinking." All or nothing thinking is when an individual looks at something as all goods or all bads with no in between. People with panic disorder often see themselves as overly nervous or frazzled. When they see themselves this way they go without noticing the times they're calm, cool, and collected. They will either see themselves as a huge success or a huge failure.

Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia Nervosa, commonly known as Binge-Eating Disorder is a mental disorder in one which a person binges followed by behaviors designed to prevent weight gain from the binges. A binge is classified as uncontrolled eating of large amounts of food. Some behaviors include self-induced vomiting, abuse of laxatives (or other purging medications), fasting, and excessive exercise. Like anorexia nervosa, about 90-95% of bulimia cases occur in females. The peak age of onset is between 15-21 years old and the symptoms can last for several years.

Myristic Acid

The assumed myristic acid was analyzed using hydrolysis and then by melting point. The melting point of the product was found to be 53 °C. This is slightly lower than the expected melting point of myristic acid of 54.4 °C however found within a narrow range alluding that the product may have been relatively pure. The yield obtained for myristic acid was 86.6% which is rather high. This relatively high yield may have been obtained by not adding excess liquid because adding too much liquid would result in loss.

Biodiversity is a term used to describe all species in an environment that coexist (Alteiri, 1999). Biodiversity creates a stable ecosystem by offering protection and regulation to crops making the diversification essential for prosperity (Elings, 2017). Specifically, in agricultural systems, the organisms contribute to the reuse of nutrients and enhance soil fertility (Alteiri, 1999).

Memories and Neuron Groups

New research shows how our brains deal with traumatic memories and what happens when the memories rush back. We have known that the amygdala has been the part of the brain that is in charge of fear. However, a new technique shows that reliving trauma and moving past it depends on two groups found in the hippocampus. They used a technique called activity-dependent neural tagging to see where there is activity or not. They were able to flood in traumatic experiences with mice and see the activity.
