Orientation

Submitted by riyjpatel on Thu, 07/18/2019 - 13:04

We had orientation on Monday. It was alright but I was kind of nervous. I paid attention to every detail that the student leaders whether it be academically or any resources that they provided to us. The speeches were very interesting. The police officer had some good pointers and I feel very safe on campus because of that speech by the officer. I would be spending a lot of time on campus studying and doing homework and all so that speech made me feel proud of the college I’m coming to. The next part of the orientation was doing a tour which was very nice. I really enjoyed that. I was very lost on how I would get from one place to another so that was very helpful. The library is full of so many options. It was great to learn about it. In fact, I might go and check out all my options. Then, we had lunch at the franklin dining hall which was really good. Big fan of their Mexican food. I have eaten at Hampshire and Berkshire but honestly my favorite one as one of now is Hampshire dining hall. After, we went to sign up for classes. I signed for my classes but I didn’t like the part where we had to wait because we were a big group mainly because some classes I wanted to take got full. I had students helping me which I was iffy about but then I felt comfortable knowing she was the same major as me.

Information Literacy

Today we looked websites of information literacy where we all had to report reliability, validity, and trustworthiness of the site. There are 14 groups. Group 1 is a Wikipedia site that I feel people can edit, yeah, the information is there but I feel that the information is edited. Eventually, you can look at the revision history to see who edits them. Group 2 is an .com website where maybe information can be reliable but I would prefer looking at .org websites. Group 3 looks precise. Group 4 is also a good resource for looking at articles. Group 5 is also interesting because it shows news that are currently around. Group 6 does look like it would have some good information but I feel if I am writing a journal or scientific publication I feel I wouldn’t use this website. Group 7 and 8 looks more of joining a club but I feel I would just call the company instead. Group 9 is awesome and definitely a trustworthy website. Group 10 seems like a kid’s section. Group 11, 13, and 15 are all .org websites so I feel that it would be precise. Group 12 seems a little hard to believe because the edits. People can edit websites but when it comes to academics I feel .org websites are a good to reference to. On top of all my observations, Wikipedia seems like a good starting point for a term of no understanding. Other sites seem like a good stepping point because you will get information out of them whether it be accurate or not. Although, cited information is always accurate more.

Methods Project

Multi panel figure directions:

Upper Right Corner: Should be the location of where you have found the affected plant.

Upper Left Corner: Should be the affected part of the leaf

Bottom Right Corner: Should have an arrow pointing towards the affected part of the leave in the whole plant.

Bottom left Corner: Should be a measurement scale on the plant indicating how long the plant.

There are many leaf miners out there. I found a leaf miner in the Franklin Permaculture Garden. I decided to make a multi panel figure illustrating what I found. I took pictures of the leaf miner and an object to measure the leaf miner with it along with the location of the leaf miner. I made a figure on inkscape. I made a figure that showed the leaf miner that can be published in a scientific publication. As I made my figure I kept in mind that I make sure my pictures are perfectly equal in size. I laid my pictures and made them into a figure by rearranging and sizing them equally and making sure I don’t stretch my pictures out because the picture should be clear. I also labeled my pictures so that they are clear when published into a publication. I also remembered to point the leaf miner out in the whole plant in my figure. I also needed to make sure I leave no background so that the figure can be seen perfectly. I made sure that my figure looked scientific when published in a book or journal.

I woke up at 9am. I checked my phone. I spoke to my parents in India. Then, I went to the bathroom and brushed my teeth. I took a shower. I did my prayers. I headed to the kitchen. I made pancakes and had orange juice to eat. I got ready for college. Before, I went to the bus stop I checked my mail. I got on the bus. I got off the morrill center on the umass campus. I came to class. I went back downstairs to look for a leaf miner. I took pictures of a leaf. I came back to class. I went back downstairs and took more pictures of the leaves. I came back to class. I finished class and headed to Walmart. I took the bus home after grocery shopping. I cooked Indian food.    I ate. I did homework. I watched Netflix. I spoke to parents. I watched a documentary on the anatomy of the heart. I brushed my teeth. I went to bed.

Analysis of a Leaf

Submitted by riyjpatel on Tue, 07/09/2019 - 15:23

The leaf has a stem that attaches the leaf to the plant. The petiole (the stalks that joins a leaf to a stem) is extended into the leaf and divides equally into two. The leaf has an unknown line going through the leaf like a bunch of scribbles making it seem as if an insect has left its trial on it. Chlorophyll is definitely present in the leaf giving off the green color as it absorbs light energy. The leaf is very long with a bunch of veins through it. The structure of the leaf on the outside is very spiky. There’s a minor cut on the bottom of the leaf not going all the way to the stem but close enough. The leaf feels very smooth but can feel the veins the make the leaf. The bottom of the stem is very thick because its ripped off the plant. It has a small brown patch near the base of the leaf. The leaf is 18.5 cm long. The width of the leaf varies anywhere from 1-5cm wide. The leaf has parallel margins meaning a mirror image. It portrays a long line with spikes coming out in the center probably known as the midrib.

Leaf Analysis

This leaf is freshly green. My leaf has a stem that attaches the leaf to the plant. The petiole (the stalks that joins a leaf to a stem) is extended into the leaf and divides equally into two. The leaf has a weird line going through the leaf like a bunch of scribbles making it seem as if an insect has left its trial on it. The leaf is very long and has a midrib through it. It also has a ton of veins. The structure of the leaf on the outside is very spiky. There’s a minor cut on the bottom of the leaf not going all the way to the stem but close enough. The leaf feels very smooth but can feel the veins the make the leaf. The bottom of the stem is very thick because its ripped off the plant. The stem gets thinner and thinner as it runs down the leaf. It has a small brown patch near the base of the leaf. The leaf is 18.5 cm long. The width of the leaf varies anywhere from 1-5cm wide. The leaf has parallel margins. It portrays a long line with spikes coming out in the center probably known as the midrib. Chlorophyll is definitely present in the leaf giving off the green color as it absorbs light energy.
