Real-time PCR or qPCR is the real-time monitoring of amplification in the reaction through the use of fluorescence. The purpose of qPCR is to estimate the initial quantity of specific template DNA. Unlike conventional PCR, qPCR has high sensitivity, reproducibility, and high throughput. The amplification of the DNA sample in each cycle can be observed in a sigmoidal graph. Software can calculate the threshold line or where the fluorescence rises appreciably above background and the Ct value or the fractional cycle number where fluorescence crosses the threshold line. Mercury in MMR Vaccine

Although vaccinations have been routine health care for kids for many years, some parents now believe that one may cause autism. The vaccine in question is the MMR vaccine, which prevents the measles, mumps, and rubella. Parents are questioning its mercury content as the cause of autism in some kids. This recent scare is due to the rise in autism in the past few years. The media has been spreading rumors about the vaccination that is causing parents to prevent doctors from administering the vaccine. Their fears are mislead, especially since no medical research has proven that the mercury in this vaccine has any effect on the child. In fact, research has proven that the disorder begins in the womb, long before any vaccines are given at all. Therefore, parents may be making misinformed decisions that might lead to their child suffering from measles, mumps, or rubella. At this point research has shown that children are more likely to be at risk for one of these sicknesses rather than autism when the vaccine is not administered.

Perfect Stem Cell Research

Stem cell research is working toward providing more human organs for transport which would assist in resolving an issue that causes 7,000 deaths annually. It is a process by which a woman's ovum and the nucleus from a cell of the recipient (i.e. a skin cell) are joined. The goal is to produce undifferentiated cells like those we all had during the embryonic stage of our development. From those undifferentiated cells scientists would foster the development of the necessary organ for the transplant.

Hiccups

Many people have hiccups and wonder what they are, where they come from, and how to treat them. Hiccups are sudden, involuntary contractions of the diaphragm muscle. As the muscle contracts repeatedly, the opening between your vocal cords snaps shut to check the inflow of air and makes the sound of a hiccup. This can happen by eating or drinking too fast which could lead to too much air being swallowed with the food. Eating fatty foods and drinking too much alcohol can cause hiccups as well. There is no cure for hiccups and many people have their own cures and remedies.

The Eastern Coyote

The Eastern coyote has often been viewed as a pest or a danger; however, scientific research has shown that this isn't the case. Often times, people fear for the safety of their children and pets. In western America, there are, in fact, many recorded instances of coyote attacks. If these two coyotes are viewed as the same species, then there is definite reason to fear coyotes. However, new research supports that the Eastern and Western coyote are two different species that behave differently. In the case of Massachusetts, for example, coyotes have been in the area for the past 60 years, during which there were three reports of coyote bites - two of which were confirmed to be rabid. This means that these coyotes were behaving abnormally. In actuality, dog bites are more commonplace: 15-20 people die from dog attacks per year.

Perfect REM

Soon after non-rapid eye movement sleep we enter what is known as rapid eye movement sleep, REM. This is the stage where almost all of our dreams occur. REM sleep is very interesting in that once we leave stage four of NREM where our brainwaves are slow and far between each other, we enter the deepest part of our sleep where our brain waves actually return to their level highest level. These wave patterns in REM are nearly identical to our brain waves during the waking part of the day. So while you are slumbering in a deep sleep your brain is just as active as it is during the day when you could be sitting in class. The main difference however is that REM causes atonia, or a paralysis in which we are unable to move at all. Another difference is that the front and back of the brain are less synchronized than in waking.

Duck House

The Brandywine Pond is home to many ducks and geese during the spring, summer, and fall. They seek warmer climates during the winter season, but I recently noticed that a few ducks have stayed the entire winter. There is a small house close by the pond that was built to keep the ducks safe over the winter. It is surrounded by a cage so the ducks cannot escape and predators cannot attack them. The groundsmen feed the ducks daily and treat them as pets rather than wild animals. I have wondered if this effects the ducks in a negative way since they are not able to travel with the others between seasons. Natural selection has been interferred with in the case of these three ducks, especially since some animals rely on interactions with other members of their species for survival or feeding. By building the house, humans have taken over the tasks of providing shelter and finding food for oneself in the case of these individuals. If people no longer took care of these ducks, I believe they would be at a great disadvantage since they are used to being provided with food and shelter. Other members of their species have not had such care and therefore would be better able to fend for themselves on their own.
