A Sign of the Times: Using Drupal to build a network of digital displays

It's OK to do something quickly and just build it: then you can rebuild it, refine it -- it doesn't have to be perfect from the beginning.

Drupal is just a box of legos

1) WHY WE DID IT

background

commercial solution in LGRT -- sucked
commerical solution is ISB -- sucked!!!!
 (mole video)
 There must be something better

Biology department

 investigated options
 bought display
 bought mac mini
 looked for recipe

Geosciences:

 used powerpoint
 sucked
   distorted slides
   froze
   unable to update

Build it!

2) WE DID IT!

Here's a sign!

 slideshow! (Oooh!)
 headlines! (Aaah!)
 clock! (OOoh!)
 weather! (Aaah!)

Version 2: for the college (and depts)

here's a sign:

3) HOW WE DID IT!

Here's how we did it!

specify the content:

 events
 news
shows up on page, signs, rss feeds, etc

Made a page view (views_slideshow) (with URL)

made a block view (events)

Layout for dimensions of sign:

made a custom theme

module: Theme Key (at URL)

client: radmind

browser on client

 full screen
 eliminating pointer

script on client

showing different URLs at different times

(not 4) (WE LEARNED STUFF (HERP/DERP!))

made/tweaked content types

teasers too long, truncated teasers suck

performance module issues

 clock borken

Monitors

they come in various sizes! (herpderp!)
 aspect ratios

(not 5) THE FUTURE

client -> raspberry pi

control -> web interface

Personal tools
