Summary of Course Modifications

The goal of our modifications has been to engage students in rich problem-solving experiences during classtime. To prepare students for problem-solving, we have created a course web site that couples a Class Preparation Page with an Online Quiz and provides supplementary materials for review.

The Class Preparation Page contains:

  • Key concepts and questions to be addressed around a specific weekly topic.
  • Specific textbook reading assignments
  • Links to media, activities, and other web sites that support the readings.
  • Online Quiz (using Duck).

Setting different goals, requires evaluating students using different criteria. Our exams focus on problem solving, NOT memorization or recall of basic definitions and facts. We expect students to generalize their ability to use models to predict outcomes or interpret results and apply problem solving skills to solve novel problems.A
