Academic Research Internships

Previous Program Participants

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Academic Year Research Internships will support 16 students to initiate or continue their laboratory research (with an emphasis in genomics, bioinformatics and bioimaging) for the FULL ACADEMIC YEAR. Students eligible to apply for these internships science majors with an overall GPA of 3.0 or better conducting life science research. Preference is given to students in their Sophomore or Junior year.

*UPDATE: If a student is receiving credit for their ARI proposed project, they cannot participate in the program. In other words, a student cannot get credit and be paid for the same research project.

Students chosen to be Junior Fellows in the Life Sciences are not eligible to apply.

Each HHMI research intern will receive a $1200 stipend with an additional $500 provided to the host laboratory for research supplies. Participants will be selected based on their academic credentials, their proposed research project and letters of recommendation.

At the start and end of the program, interns will meet to discuss their research experiences and the process of science.

HOW TO APPLY:
To complete an application for the 2009-2010 Academic Year Research Internship students should:

1. Fill out the student application form (link below)
(Note: you will be asked to upload a resume/CV as well as an unofficial transcript so please have those ready before you begin filling out the online application. Documents can be in either .doc or .pdf format)

2. Have your faculty sponsor (person in whose lab you will be working during the academic year) fill out the Faculty Sponsor Application Form (link below). You are responsible for finding a lab that will support your research BEFORE submitting an application. If you need help finding a lab, please contact the Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarship for information and guidance.

The faculty sponsor letter of recommendation is weighed heavily in the application process. We recommend that you communicate this to your sponsor. We do not consider any applications that do not have a faculty sponsor form filled out.

3. Ask another individual who can speak to your potential to succeed in a research internship (other than the faculty sponsor) to fill out the Recommendation Form (link below). We do not recommend having employers fill out this form unless your employment was directly related to science research.

4. Application deadline was extended to October 1, 2009 by 5:00 pm. Only COMPLETED applications will be considered. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that all parts of the application are completed since we will not contact students about missing components. Applicants will receive email notification (at their UMass email address) of the Selection Committee's decision no later than Friday, October 9 by 6pm.
