| | About the ImageThe Drosophila Dichaete protein contains a conserved HMG DNA-binding domain that is related to Sry, the mammalian testis-determining factor. In most tissues, Dichaete protein is localized to cell nuclei where it regulates gene transcription. However, during oogenesis, Dichaete expression is detected in the cytoplasm of the developing oocyte where it has RNA-binding functions and influences early pattern formation of the egg. This stage 5 egg chamber shows localization of Dichaete in the cytoplasm surrounding the posterior side of the oocyte nucleus. Dichaete is not detected in any of the anterior-located germline nurse cells.
