About the Image

Fluorscence microscopy of an abdomen (dorsal view) from a Drosophila pupa of the genotype: P[GawB]32B/P[UAS-GFP::LacZ].

The P[GawB]32B P element drives expression of the yeast Gal4 protein in larval epidermal cells (green). Gal4 binds to the UAS sites in P[UAS-GFP::LacZ] P element and activates expression of a Green Fluorescent Protein::LacZ fusion protein.

All of these larval cells undergo programmed cell death and are replaced by adult epidermal cells which generate the adult abdominal cuticle (exoskeleton).
