| | About the ImageThe European paper wasp (Polistes dominulus) is a recently
arrived invasive species in the United States. First observed in
Cambridge Massachusetts in 1980, it has been steadily spreading south
and west. European paper wasps are often mistaken for yellow jackets,
but are generally not as aggressive (though reportedly they are more
aggressive than the native paper wasps, which are being displaced
by the invaders). This colony was discovered in between the window
and the screen of the Introductory Biology laboratory.
