SCN brain graft

SCN brain graft

About the Image

The suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus (SCN) contains a master circadian pacemaker. Ablation of the SCN makes hamsters arrhythmic, and transplants containing fetal SCN can reinstate circadian rhythms with the period of the donor. This micrograph illustrates such a successful brain graft. It is stained for the neuromodulator VIP, which is characteristic of the SCN and may constitute an important output which informs the rest of the brain about time of day.
