Expression of the period1 gene in hamster ovarian follicle. The per1 gene has been implicated in the control of circadian rhythms through its participation in a light-regulated negative feedback loop in the hypothalamus. Its expression in the oocyte may reflect the operation of a circadian clock even before fertilization, or could indicate other functions.
