About the Image

This is an image of a mutant polytene chromosome from a chironomid midge. The area to the right surrounded by red is a duplication or translocation mutation that is rare in Massachusetts populations of this aquatic fly. The red indicates protein that is being synthesized by the novel chromosome region, which is puffed because of this protein synthesis activity. This image was captured under a 60X oil immersion objective using the Nikon e600 SPOT digital camera in the Central Microscopy Facility. Colors were later added using Adobe Photoshop.
