About the Image

Transcriptional profiling of E. coli under oxidative stress. The image shows hybridization signals from gene arrays containing 4283 ORFs. Total RNA was extracted from growing cultures in rich medium, and labeled cDNA was synthesized by extension of ORF-specific primers by reverse transcriptase. The left panel is from control, unstressed cells. The right panel is from cells treated with the superoxide-producing agent paraquat. The highlight squares show signal intensities for duplicate spots of two genes: an unresponsive gene and the responsive gene sodA, coding for a superoxide dismutase.
