Pandorus sphinx

About the Image

This is the Pandorus sphinx moth, Eumorpha pandorus, which can have a 5 inch wingspan. It is common in the Pioneer Valley, flying from May to October. The image was adapted from Plate V in Thaddeus Harris' Insects Injurious to Vegetation, 1862. Even as a scanned image, this is a stunning example of the beautiful scientific artwork that was done in the 19th century.
