About the Image

This image, which shows T-Lymphocyte-Specific Protein Tyrosine Kinase [Complex (SH2 Domain/Inhibitor)], was created in the Intro Biology laboratory and indicates sequence conservation (green =identity, yellow =concensus, blue =similiar). Students performed a BLAST search, selected similiar sequences by function, and performed a CLUSTALW alignment. Colors were applied to the 3D protein structure using the Protein Explorer software developed by Eric Martz and supported by the NSF. Students were challenged to suggest hypotheses regarding why some sequences were more likely to be conserved than others.
